About Us Our History
- Our church was officially
organized on August 6, 1864 by a group of citizens who felt the need for a
Presbyterian Church in the village of Gloversville. A retired minister and
former member of the Kingsborough Presbyterian Church, Joseph S. Heacock,
led this effort in 1863. At the time of organizing in 1864 there were 34
charter members.
- The cornerstone of our church
on the corner of West Fulton Street and Bleecker Street was laid on July 4,
1865. Among other articles placed in the cornerstone was a story of the
founding of our church that included this message, "We of the present
send greetings to the generation that shall live when the cornerstone shall
be opened. May we then be in Heaven and you on your way thither, through
that one Lord Jesus, who is the only true cornerstone in state or in Church
for time and for eternity."
- The original church building on this site was completed and dedicated on May
22,1866. Since that time we have seen many changes and withstood many
challenges to continue to serve our Lord and our community faithfully. Our
spiritual cornerstone continues to be our Lord Jesus as we strive to
maintain a sense of tradition and our openness to the ministry of God's
spirit in our time.
Our Mission
- The First Presbyterian Church
supports Mission Outreach through the Unified Mission Giving of the
Presbyterian Church (USA), One Great Hour of Sharing, Peacemaking
Offering, Church World Services, Heifer Project and other Christian
Missions. Individual church organizations support numerous national
and local causes.
- The First Presbyterian
Church Food Pantry feeds thousands of hungry people from all over
Fulton County.
Our Goals
- To
grow in our awareness of the leading of the Holy Spirit.
- To
lead others to the knowledge and love of Christ.
- To
be faithful to and to love our fellow members in Christ, by ministering to
their needs for spiritual and physical comfort.
- To
reach out to those in need in the name of Christ.
- To
offer fellowship to the lonely; to be a true family of God.
- To
grow in our knowledge of God's Word and to teach the young and the old
about God's Word and His love.
Session
- The Session is a Board of
Elders responsible for the mission and government of our church. It consists
of nine Elders in active service and the Pastor, who is also the Moderator
of the Session. The Session has established teams that guide the church's
programs and administer its business.
Deacons
- The office of Deacon is
primarily a ministry of service to the congregation and the community.
Following the example of Jesus Christ, our Deacons seek to minister to those
in need, to the sick, and to any that may be in distress.
- The Deacons visit shut-ins,
participate in the Sunday morning activity of ushering, sponsor coffee hours
and fellowship meals, and operate a food pantry that serves thousands of
hungry community residents each year.
